X-Type: cooling that scales module by module

A modular, helium-3-free architecture that separates the cooling infrastructure from the quantum setup. Kiutra is running it as a beta programme; Paeonia Bloch can connect groups in ASEAN with it.

Cooling modules and payload modules

Instead of one cryostat sized for the largest experiment you will ever run, the X-Type joins cooling modules to payload modules. The quantum setup lives in the payload module; cooling capacity is added by adding cooling modules. Kiutra describes cryogen-free cooling at millikelvin temperatures with helium-3-independent operation.

The images on this page are Kiutra's renders: the X-Type is in beta and Kiutra has not published photographs of it.

Base configurations

What Kiutra publishes

Cooling power per stage for the two base configurations on kiutra.com.

Superconducting qubits · 2 cooling + 1 payload module

  • 1st cryocooler stage 50 K 10 W (+35 W with an additional cryocooler)
  • 2nd cryocooler stage 4 K 0.8 W (+1 W)
  • Intermediate stage 300 mK 0.7 mW
  • Payload stage 20 mK 20 µW
  • Base temperature < 12 mK

Spin qubits · 1 cooling + 1 payload module

  • 1st cryocooler stage 50 K 5 W (+35 W)
  • 2nd cryocooler stage 4 K 0.4 W (+1 W)
  • Payload stage 300 mK 10 mW
  • Base temperature < 100 mK

Scaling

A payload module carries 768 lines. Kiutra's scaling example combines three base configurations, each delivering 20 µW at 20 mK for up to 768 RF lines, and a recombined system of six cooling modules delivering 100 µW at 20 mK across payload modules of 768 and 3,072 RF lines. Wiring at that density is where Delft Circuits Cri/oFlex® comes in; Kiutra and Delft Circuits have worked together on projects including the cADR demonstrator.
